Abstract

The essence of science education is to produce confident, self-employable, scientifically, and technically sound men and women. Unfortunately, the chemistry curriculum appears not to have achieved much of its objectives. These lapses might have been caused by non-availability and usability of chemistry laboratory facilities for teaching organic chemistry. It is against this background that this study examined the extent  of availability and usability of chemistry laboratory facilities for teaching organic chemistry in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government area of Enugu State. The study was carried out in fifteen different schools with the sample of one teacher from each school. An inventory containing 69 items was designed for the study. Data collected were analyzed using percentage and mean. The study indicates that the extent at which chemistry laboratory facilities for teaching organic chemistry in senior secondary school are available and utilized is very low, Based on the findings of this study in adequate provision of chemistry laboratory facilities in senior secondary schools by the government influences the extent at whichteachers utilizes chemistry laboratory facilities for teaching organic chemistry. Therefore government should ensure adequate provision of laboratory facilities, schools should source  funds from organization like PTA and NGOs and finally, teachers should develop the spirit of professionalism by using the available laboratory facilities in teaching
organic chemistry.
